People and Pies

I had a hard time falling asleep last night.  And it was all this couple’s faulty! Well, sorta – allow me to explain.

I’ve held my share of lofty corporate titles.  I mean it was amazing how other folks envied and desired my previously held positions.  No matter how great the job seemed to everyone else and regardless of the offered salary, I was always miserable in all of them.  Miserable like crying in the office bathroom stall.  Miserable like drowning my angst in chocolate muffins miserable.  Miserable like constantly asking myself if this is what I came to earth to do miserable.   The answer, when I was speaking truthfully with myself was always, no.

For a number of years, I held an Executive level gig and acted in commercials and posed for print ads and even lent my talents to a few films.  The acting certainly fed the creative beast within, but it proved to be only an appetizer.  My soul cried out for more.  The essence of me is pure story telling.  That’s it!  I got it!  I finally got it.  Me happy when me tell stories!! And everything has it’s own story. From people to pies to pets – to everything there is a story!

Yesterday I attended my very first Photography workshop and I took some pictures I think are pretty cool and everything just made  sense.   Here’s how it went down.

I have been stalking Christina Chang for a few weeks now and I noticed she was hosting a Photography workshop in the Bay Area.  She’s a very successful destination wedding photographer living in LA.  Of course the workshop was SOLD OUT!  Boo… But then something amazing happened.  While perusing her Facebook page I noticed she was giving away ONE slot to her sold out course.  All we had to do was tell her why we loved photography.

Yeah, I can do that… What I said went a little something like this: “I recently decided to open myself up to this crazy little thing called life.  Most humans don’t even make eye contact with one another, let alone smile at each other.  Photography allows me to connect with the world around me.  There is something magical about capturing a moment of sincerity and sharing it with world. Photography is a lot like music.  It’s language is Universal.”

Boo-yah… I actually won the last slot.  If that’s not a sign from God, I don’t know what is.  I simply adore everything about photography.  The work, the hustle, the connection…. the stories.  A photographers work is never done.  The opportunity to learn and grow is limitless.  What a thrill.  I’ve firmly decided that I will tell stories for the rest of my life.  ”Success is liking yourself, liking what you do, and liking how you do it.” Maya Angelou.  I will be highly sought after and paid for telling my stories.

Hi, my name is Mawiyah and I’m a photographer.
